What I can tell you though is that this game is more on the sim than the arcade side. I think they did fudge around with Freespace controls a bit I can’t say for sure. The first mission is a tutorial where a slightly annoyed instructor puts you through the basic navigation and combat training. The game puts you in the role of a rookie viper pilot on Batlestar Pegasus. The default volume settings are not prefect apparently. I did notice a slight issue with volume though – sometimes it was really hard to hear the dialog over the effects, but I think that’s something I could just tweak myself via the options menu. They follow BSG cannon closely using the familiar jargon – they even do that voice distortion thing when you are in the cockpit. The acting is really decent, and the voices are surprisingly clear. This was the bit of the game that impressed me. But I’m guessing these are little details that they can iron out later.įortunately the mission briefings and in-game chatter is all voice acted. Ship and weapon descriptions are read by the Microsoft text-to-speech engine and it sounds horrible. The briefing UI and option panels are positively dreadful and unintuitive. Right now only a demo is available on the website and it is a tad rough around the edges. Besides, it is hard to review a product that is still in an early development stage. But I wanted to put a blurb about it here anyway. This is not a full review because I didn’t really get to play a lot. I never played Freespace but I do like to play space sims from time to time, and I do love BSG so I decided to give it a whirl. Beyond The Red Line is a total conversion of Freespace 2 set in the universe based on Battlestar Galactica series. What you usually end up with is a half-assed, buggy mod with sub-par graphics and degraded game play. Most of them set very ambitious goals for themselves but never quite reach them. Vanilla FS2, no there are no cockpits.I’m usually skeptical of total conversion mods. Sorry for the probable typos, typed this from a capricious device, making the cursor jump everywhere pretty randomly., 1) Don't think so - maybe in Freespace Open, but I still don't think so.Ģ) Through Freespace Open mods, yes - definitely for some of the total conversions, but not sure how many/if any mods for the regular FS campaigns have cockpits available. Telika: For now i've just installed Freespace 2 and its basic update mods, and played a bit of the tutorial. Sorry for the probable typos, typed this from a capricious device, making the cursor jump everywhere pretty randomly., Is there an in-game mode of vision that I haven't found ? Or, okay, maybe a specific excellent mod for this ? I saw several screenshots with cockpits, but I assume these are mods - either total conversions or "invented" (non-"canonical") cockpits. I know that many cockpit-based sims offer HUD vision as an option, but does Freespace 2 provide one ? I didn't find alternate views, apart from outside views. I usually prefer this to the gain of visibility provided by pure HUD display or 3rd person. It's an annoyance in many games, but freespace is to customisable, I wonder if there's an easy way to resolve this.Ģ) I'm also impressed by the colour customisation of the HUD, but I do kinda miss one element that attracks me in space sims : actual cockpit layout, as a constant reminder that we are hurling through space in a metal space can (especially with the semi-recent trend of showing acceleration and deceleration through cockpit distance). It's a bit annoying to search frantically where the slash is supposed to be. I have two question, of very moderate importance.ġ) Is there a way to define the keyboard type? I'm on a swiss qwertz, so, while I can define the keys I want, the tutorial reminder names the keys as if I had another type of keyboard. For now i've just installed Freespace 2 and its basic update mods, and played a bit of the tutorial.
